Have you ever felt so busy that it seems like there is no time to create a new habit? You feel like your day is constantly full, and yet you still have more items on your to-do list than hours in the day? Well, I am here to tell you about an easy way for even the busiest person to get a jump start on their goals: Mini Habits!
If you haven’t heard of mini-habits, you’re in for a treat. Imagine making only small adjustments in your life, and still managing to create impactful and meaningful change. I am all about incorporating mini-habits into my life because it is oftentimes easier to make small changes over time than drastic changes in one day. This makes it a much more approachable concept to those who want to begin the journey of healthy living.
Mini habits are small tasks that can be completed in less than 30 minutes each day. They might not seem like much, but they really add up over time. So if you’re feeling too busy right now for anything else, then give mini habits a try! The best part is that all these benefits come without any pressure or guilt – just take one. The first step to creating good habits is to just start.
The power of habit doesn’t stop there though. Not only can your daily habits change how you get things done, but they impact your mental health and energy level as well.
Read on to discover the 4 powerful benefits and positive changes of Mini-habits.
1. You create an atmosphere of success.
Setting small goals lets you feel accomplished with every little win. Instead of setting the impossible goal to return all your phone calls promptly, it’s better to set a more attainable goal like returning one call on time and then repeating that task until you meet your target. This will take off some pressure so instead of feeling overwhelmed or floored by failure when we don’t make an unrealistic deadline, we’ll actually be able to move forward without beating ourselves up for not being perfect! What’s even better is that meeting these small goals means you get to where you start expecting success, which leads to the mindset that will generate that success you’re expecting.
As I often say to friends and business colleagues, give yourself some grace. Don’t beat yourself up if you didn’t perform actions like you would like in the past but keep pushing forward to positively impact the next thing.
2. You change how you view your capabilities. By accomplishing mini-goals, you start to realize that you do have the ability and power to accomplish things. Your confidence grows, and you gain a better, more positive sense of your abilities.
Everyone is more motivated to keep up with the habit once they get a quick win. You immediately start to feel more productive and you can start building a foundation that you can build on. Have goals and work towards them each day.
3. You rediscover motivation. Motivation is sometimes hard to come by and gets used up quickly. That’s why mini-habits are important as they don’t rely on motivation to accomplish things, they grow from willpower instead. Then as you reach those goals, you start to feel the energy of that success, which in turn creates motivation to keep going. The saying is true…..mindset is everything. Sometimes it just takes a daily routine or healthy habits to grow your mindset to a positive influencer in your life.
4. You create a series of changes that you will carry with you your entire life. Mini-habits done daily will build up those larger habits that you’ve been trying to build all along. Like starting with a single push-up every day and creating almost as a by-product that habit of daily exercise that had seemed so daunting not all that long ago. You build muscles just like you build positive habits, willpower, and mindset.
Now that we have talked about some of the benefits and important things better habits can have in your life, I also want to give you a few tips to accelerate these new changes.
Take a Social Media Break
Social media has so many positives, but it can also hamper your progress when you are working on yourself. Women are notoriously bad about comparing themselves to others. You don’t need these negative thoughts or mindsets when you are trying to positively affect your daily life. Don’t play the comparison game or worry about what everyone else is doing. Instead, take the free time you would have spent scrolling and replace it with working on one of your new goals.
I highly suggest you journal when you start this process. When you’re having a hard day, or when you want to give up, go back and read your journal to see how far you have already come. Research shows that journaling specifically has the most measurable impact on our overall well-being. But it can be one of the most useful and cost-effective tools we have to forge a better, more emotionally and mentally healthy life.
Surround Yourself with Positive People
Have you ever heard the saying that you are the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with? The amount of time we spend with someone along with the activities is so important to our long-term health. Social connections not only affect our emotional health, but the mental health aspect of friendship is good for releasing those brain chemicals that we get when we have love, friendship, and deep trust with someone. Find a joyful person and truly get to know each other.
An effective way to improve your fitness level is to do something new with a friend. You could take up running, a fitness class like yoga, or even learn to play a new sport together. You will bond even more and hold each other accountable.
Give Yourself Grace
Like I mentioned earlier, you have to give yourself some grace. You didn’t get to where you are overnight and you certainly can’t turn it around overnight either. You are a marathon runner and not a sprinter. This is why mini-habits are so important to begin. In no time you will start to see the results of your habits and you will. be living your best life.
Buy a new planner, grab a piece of paper, download an app on your phone, and start tracking regularly. Old habits will float away and will be replaced by your new goals. The result of your habits is where you will see true growth.
It’s so easy to think that you’re too busy for anything. But if you can find time for a mini-habit, even just one small task per day, then you’ll be amazed at how much progress you’ve made in the end! It never hurts to take small steps and try something new, especially for the health benefits you will receive from it. I hope I have encouraged you today to make a habit change for better health.
